Studio vs Building Your Own Setup: The Real Numbers
Everyone runs this calculation and most people run it wrong, because they count the gear and forget the room, the time and the resale. Here is the honest version, with the break-even point stated plainly — including the case where buying is the right answer.
What a decent home setup actually costs
Two usable mics with arms and shock mounts, ₹40,000–60,000. An interface or mixer that will not hiss, ₹25,000–45,000. Two cameras you would be happy publishing, ₹80,000 upwards for anything beyond a phone. Lights, ₹15,000–25,000. Acoustic treatment done properly rather than four foam squares, ₹20,000–40,000. Storage, cables, stands and the things you forgot, ₹15,000. Realistically ₹1.9–2.6 lakh before you have recorded a word.
The cost nobody counts: the room
Gear does not fix a room. A hard-walled bedroom with a window on a Ludhiana main road will sound like a bedroom on a main road no matter what mic you buy — and every episode will need noise reduction that thins your voice. If the only space you have is that room, the gear budget above buys you a worse result than one studio hour.
The other cost nobody counts: your hours
Setting up, tearing down, troubleshooting and file-wrangling is comfortably ninety minutes per episode at home. Over twenty episodes that is thirty hours — a working week. At any sensible valuation of your own time, that exceeds the studio fee for the same twenty episodes.
